Untitled Art Society (UAS) is a gallery and studio-based artist-run centre in Calgary, Alberta. Founded in 1994, UAS has provided diverse, vital arts infrastructure for 25 years, supporting emergent practices through exhibitions and publications, providing affordable studio spaces, and programming workshops and other discursive or educational events. Founded by a collective of ACAD graduates, UAS’s history is woven through with the desire to carve out and hold space for contemporary art in Calgary through an ardent support of emerging Canadian artists.
Untitled Art Society (UAS) is a unique not-for-profit artist-run centre that was founded in 1993 by graduating students of the Alberta College of Art & Design. UAS started as a studio collective that brought together emerging artists who were looking to create a community space where they could learn, grow, and produce work in an environment that was collaborative and supportive.
UAS has had to relocate our studio facilities three times since first opening in 1993, but as a self-supporting community of artists, we have continued to survive Calgary's turbulent rental climate. In the summer of 1998, UAS moved to its current studio location, and with the assistance of Alberta Job Corps, we were able to renovate the space into sixteen studios, a gallery and office. In June of 2011 UAS acquired a new street-level, store-front gallery on 11th ave SW. This space houses the Untitled Contemporary Art Main Space and acts as a venue for our exhibition programming as well as much of our event and educational programming.
UAS continues to grow as an artist-run exhibition and production facility thanks to our dedicated group of volunteers, our members, and the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts, Calgary Arts Development, and other private sponsors.
