In the UAS Main Space
A photograph of eight women taken on April 17th, 1935, in Corbin, British Colombia, is the starting point for a series of new collaborative works by Jason de Haan and Warren McLachlan. In the photograph, a group of young women pose in various states of disrepair; the victims of a bulldozer manned by police and turned against coal miners and their families when a strike devolved into a bloody riot. Taken in the aftermath of violence, the women remain composed, a defiant document of their injuries captured on a sunny day. While the image is certainly troubling, there seems to be some optimism visible as well. These eight women, while bandaged and bruised, acted as a potent line of defense in an arduous battle of wills against the Corbin Coke and Coal company; miners verses mine, community verses company, hope verses despair.
Like much of the site’s history, information concerning this incident is largely lacking evidence and is unclear, comprised of scattered oral accounts, newspaper clippings, and uncharted documents of a town that would soon disappear. As part of an ongoing effort to excavate and re-imagine vital events in one town’s history, Sisters envisions the personas of eight unknown women, their political will, and their solidarity in the face of a violent industrial force. An exploration of the power of collective consciousness, Sisters advocates for the concept of sisterhood and equivalent forms of unity.
The Corbin Union Residency is a seasonal project initiated by a small group of artists that gather in the town of Corbin, British Columbia. Each August, the residency invites artists to produce a range of investigations into the natural and supernatural conditions that have led to the present day ghost town. These activities include artist books, archives, architecture, activism, performances, and exhibitions.

Jason de Haan
Jason de Haan (1981) is a multidisciplinary Canadian artist. He received his MFA (Sculpture) from Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY in 2014. Recent solo exhibitions include the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax (2014); Clint Roenisch Gallery, Toronto (2014); Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery (2014); Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge (2012) Museo de la Ciudad, Querétaro (2012); with Miruna Dragan at The Khyber, Halifax (2011); ODD Gallery, Dawson City (2010) and Access Gallery, Vancouver (2010).
His work has been presented in a number of group exhibitions including Scrap Metal, Toronto (2014); Bond House Projects, London (2013): Century City, East St. Arts Warren St., London (2013); Oakville Galleries (2012); with Miruna Dragan at 98 Weeks Research Project at the Thessaloniki Biennale (2011); Scotiabank Nuit Blanche, Toronto (2011); MOLAF, Bergen (2011); Art Gallery of Alberta (2013 & 2010); OK Quoi?, Sackville (2010) and Galleri Kling & Bang, Reykjavik (2009). De Haan participated in the Arctic Circle 2012 residency, “The Soiree Retreat: A bit of a Chekhovian Situation” residency at The Banff Centre (2011) and is a founding member of the Corbin Union Residency in Corbin, BC, a ghost town in the East Kootenays. Upcoming exhibitions include MASS MoCA, North Adams in 2016.
De Haan is the recipient of grants from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Canada Council for the Arts. In 2012, he was shortlisted for the Sobey Art Award representing the Prairies and the North. His work has been reviewed in The Globe and Mail, National Post, Toronto Star and in Canadian Art Magazine, Art in America, and Art Forum. He is represented in Canada by Clint Roenisch Gallery.
Warren McLachlan (1975, Calgary, AB) is a multidisciplinary artist working and living in Vancouver, BC. McLachlan’s practice is concerned with material and immaterial resonance. Searching for unrecognized potential in existing formats and systems, his work seeks to present alternate versions of personal and collective history.
McLachlan is a founding member of the Corbin Union Residency in Corbin, BC, a ghost town in the East Kootenays and regularly curates exhibitions at Dynamo Arts Association in Vancouver, BC. He received a MA from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London, UK, and a BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design, Calgary, AB.
