"I was inspired to make this piece after watching a simple experiment. A sea urchin was placed upside-down in a normal ocean water mixture, and righted itself in about one minute. The same urchin was then placed upside-down in water from just below the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, wherecaulerpa taxifolia ('Killer Algae') was accidentally leaked by the museum in 1984. The urchin struggled for a little over half an hour to right itself. The museum continues to deny fault and has never cleaned up their mess. With Urchins, I would like to call attention to the beauty of the ocean, as well as the importance of preserving it."
