Untitled Art Society aims to support Calgary's arts communities by maintaining and programming various facilities including affordable studio and darkroom space.
UAS Studio Spaces: • are safe and secure • offer a local community of artists • maintain 24/7 access for all studio members • offer private, lockable studio spaces • offer basic office facilities • offer use of common space for artistic projects
The UAS studios were initially formed in 1993 by graduating students of the Alberta College of Art & Design who were looking to create a community space where they could learn, grow, and produce work in an environment that was collaborative and supportive.
Today, being part of the UAS studios allows artists to gain access to networking and exhibition opportunities, studio visits with curators, participation in Artwalk activities, and all of the educational and event initiatives held as part of UAS programming.
UAS studio members pay rent based on the square footage of their studio space. UAS offers subsidized studio space to artists in a secure building with 24 hour access. Rent includes all utilities and a public access computer. Studios are private and secure.
UAS releases calls for interest when studio spaces become available. Join our monthly newsletter to the right to receive updates on all studio vacancies.
Note about UAS studios: All UAS studios are rented for a subsidized rate, that means that studios are rented at less than the cost to UAS. UAS collects a damage deposit equal to one month's rent, a 30.00 key deposit for the first set, and a 100.00 key deposit for addition sets for shared studios. Each studio is required to contribute 2 hours per month of volunteering, for more information on volunteer opportunities please visit our Get Involved page.
Applications for shared studios are encouraged in order to offset the rental costs to artists. Studio facilities are secure, the building locks after 6PM and on weekends and the floor remains locked at all times, studios are also partitioned and locked for individual security. There is an on-site property manager (employed by the building) and a volunteer facilities director available by phone. Cleanliness of the bathrooms and garbage removal is taken care of by the building, but the common space and kitchen is maintained by the studio renters.
Additional Facilities: In addition to studio space, UAS offers a public access computer, kitchen with light appliances, large fridge, bathroom and utility sink. There is also a common area with a large working table that studio renters are welcomed to use as an additional work space, as long as it is clean and free of materials by the time they leave for the day. Studios are accessible 24 hours per day with no holiday closures. There is a large freight elevator to assist studio members in bringing large items into the space and a loading dock at the back of the building. Please note that individual studios are only accessible by a normal sized doorway.
UAS is a non-toxic environment, oil paint is permitted with low-fume solvents or linseed oil. No materials that emit toxic fumes are permitted in the studios, any spraying can be done on the loading dock.
